Nutcracker- MMmmmmm

Nutcracker- MMmmmmm
I’m not sure if and how I should address The Nutcracker Ballet in America. I have created a number of them in Charlotte, Jacksonville, Lakeland, St. Petersburg, Westchester, Long Island, etc.
As a Dancer and now as a Choreographer, it has always been a very profitable industry.
As the Director of a new Company, my small group of dancers was able with my help to have a very profitable “Nutcracker Season”.
It is amazing to me that a German Story, with a Russian score has become an American Tradition.
The Good News- From Thanksgiving till New Years Day, there are thousands of Nutcrackers done throughout the USA.
The Bad News- Probably about 50% of these productions are not really very good.

The Bad News- Probably about 50% of these productions are not really very good. Thus bringing bad classical ballet to audiences throughout America. In these same productions student dancers are not auditioned or chosen by talent or merit. These productions are simply dancing school business.
Now none of this would bother me if it were not for the fact that many American’s will go to Nutcracker and not find Ballet to be very interesting because of the quality of what they are seeing locally.
Or that, student dancer of all ages spend more time focused on The Nutcracker and their parts in it, than in actually learning how to dance.
Now the flip side of this is that The Nutcracker may inspire many future professional dancers. I hope that is true.
I would hope and this may be a pipe dream, that every person who attends a Nutcracker this season would go out and see one other Dance Performance of any kind in the year leading up to the next annual Nutcracker season. To me that would make all this very much worthwhile. Nuff Said!

Interesting reflection on the Nutcracker. Visions of sugar plums danced in your head. . . not so much. Funny how there are so many wonderful ballets out there and Nutcracker is the one that causes the most commotion. Well, maybe not so funny, maybe just a little sad.

    I agree, Nuff Said.

Having re-read this, I was wondering if your would be willing to share your thoughts on “summer intensives”. Are they necessary for a dancers development or just something fun to do? Understand if you would rather not express an opinion but just thought I’d ask.
